How to Manage Sugar Intake

According to some sources, Americans eat about 20 teaspoons of added sugar a day.  The new guidelines suggest that we cut our consumption by half or less.  Here are my top 5 tips for how to manage your sugar consumption and make these treats and snacks work for you:

1.     Instead of buying yogurt with sugar added, buy a low-fat plain yogurt and add slices of banana and a tablespoon of chia seeds for fiber and extra protein.  Make it a little sweeter by adding a tablespoon of local honey.

2.     Cut your soda or juice by replacing half with water or seltzer.  You’ll love the refreshing taste.

3.     Eat local honey.  While honey contains sugar, it is loaded with important nutrients which are beneficial to the immune system.

4.     Eat a smaller portion.  Sugar is a reality and there is nothing wrong with enjoying it here and there.  Enjoy a small square of chocolate or ¼ of a chocolate chip cookie with that afternoon coffee or tea.

5.     When you find yourself wanting more sugar, pause and ask yourself whether you have had enough protein and fiber that day.  Often a lack of these will contribute to sugar cravings.
