Talking to Your Kids About Sugar
My kids began reading labels at the grocery store and made it a point to examine sugar grams of products in our kitchen. A few days later, I made them a smoothie using plain, low-fat yogurt, pure whey protein, a handful of frozen organic blueberries, half a banana and some chia seeds. They exclaimed, “This has 12 grams of sugar per cup!”
“Plain yogurt does have sugar”, I explained. “Lactose is a natural sugar in dairy products but many yogurts have added sugar while this one doesn’t. Plus, you’re gaining from the antioxidants in the berries and fiber from the banana and chia seeds. The yogurt and whey powder pack a punch for protein.” Madeleine’s nutrient-rich smoothie is significantly lower in sugar than a store-bought version with sweetened yogurt and/or fruit juice. But remember to make it taste good! A small amount of natural sugar allows us to enjoy our food and I consider it an acceptable addition to a balanced diet. We want our kids to be asking for more!
Both children and adults need clarification about nutrient values and what constitutes a “healthful” diet. Reading labels is a good start but knowing how to balance foods and maximize your nutrient intake will take us all to the next level: better energy, focus and balance.
